Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Highland Lynx, a Desert lynx and an Alpine ?

Non white Kittens with large straight ears are commonly referred to as a Desert Lynx. If they are born with curls ears the are considered a Highland Lynx.  A white kitten or white with a marbled or striped patterns are called Alpine Lynx.

What is Polydactyl or poly paws?

While most cats have 5 toes in the front and 4 in the back Polydactyl cats are born 6 or more giving them very large feet that resemble a mitten or thumbs on their paws.  Not only are they very cute but they also give the kittens some advantages. The wider paws give them more balance, stability on multiple surfaces and make them better climbers. They use these digits for grasping toys and other objects and they can even figure out how to open doors and cabinets with their non opposable thumbs!

What about the tails?

Kittens can be born with a full length tail, a short tail 1/2 or 3/4 length) or a very short bobtail similiar to a wild bobcat. We never crop our kittens tails. If you adopt a bobtail kitten from us you can be assured it is born with its natural bobtail and has not been altered.

What do I feed my Highland lynx?

Your highlander is a domestic cat and can eat regular cat food or if you choose you can feed them a raw diet. We feed our kittens a grain free dry food high in taurine. Taurine can be found in fish and seafood.  It is good for digestion, vision, strong bones and heart muscle function and a healthy immune system.  We mix wet food into they dry food at least once a day and buy fishy flavors of wet food to add more taurine. Wet food is important to incorporate for hydration as well.  Dehydrated cats are susceptible to uti (urinary tract infections) and wet food helps keep your kitty hydrated. You can feed your kitten however you like but make sure to change the food over gradually. We recommend mixing your food of choice in small amounts over a 7 day period gradually increasing your food. Day 1 will be mostly the kitten food we provided with a small amount of the new brand. By day 4 the mix should be 1/2 old brand and 1/2 new brand. By day 7 it should be mostly your new brand. If you switch your kitten over too fast they will likely end up throwing up or with diarrhea.
